Why A Smart Helmet Is Essential

Cycling is easy to get around and enjoy your city's scenic routes. But as with any adventure, safety is a concern and a priority for many. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) a majority of the 80,000 cycling related head injuries treated in emergency rooms each year are brain injuries. A good bicycle helmet makes all the difference when it comes to decreasing your chances of a head injury while riding, and thanks to modern technology, a Smart Helmet includes features that will enhance your overall safety such as an improved protection system, added signal lights to notify passersby of your direction, hands-free Bluetooth to pair your phone to the helmet’s bone conduction speaker system, and so much more, packed into a sleek designed helmet that’s no less bulky than a regular helmet without these added features.

Patented MIPS Technology

MIPS stands for Multi-directional Impact Protection System, a technology that can be added to helmets to provide extra protection in the event of an angled impact.

MIPS is a helmet safety system that reduces rotational forces on the brain caused by angled impacts to the head. It consists of three layers:

  • An outer shell made of expanded polystyrene (EPS).
  • An inner layer with multiple channels molded into it.
  • An elastomeric liner with four segments that slide back and forth inside each channel as you move your head around. When impacted from any angle other than straight on, this sliding action redirects force away from your head and toward your neck muscles instead of onto your brain.

The patented MIPS technology (Multi-directional Impact Protection System) is built into our Asgard and TYR3 smart helmets. MIPS reduces rotational forces on your head during an impact by up to 50% compared with traditional helmets. This is especially important if a car strikes from behind while riding your bike or if a fall happens at speed. Without MIPS technology, it would be likely that serious injury could occur because of such impacts and falls.

Integrated Rear and Front Lights

Some smart helmets like our Asgard, SK8 and TYR series smart helmets have integrated rear and front lights. These increase the visibility to those around you so anyone from walking pedestrians to driver’s can spot you while you’re out biking, especially in the evening or at night. In addition, the automatic brake lights are an added safety measure. When you apply your brakes, the sensors in the smart helmet will automatically activate the brake lights to signal to the people behind you that you’ve come to a stop. While cycling, your visibility is essential to your safety, some E-Bikes come with a rear lights and a front light, and reflectors, and some bikes don’t come with any lights or reflectors at all, in this case, the integrated lights on the smart helmet are enough to make sure your seen.

Bluetooth Enabled

All our Smart Helmets are equipped with Bluetooth technology. Bluetooth is a key component to any smart helmets as it transforms a regular helmet into one that's connected to device that gives you access to so much more such as  connecting your phone to listen to music, answer calls or listen to GPS directions. Avoid distractions that come with using your phone and stay focused on the road, decreasing the chances of an accident, and improving your overall riding experience.

Bone Conduction Speakers

One of the most common complaints about wearing headphones or earbuds while cycling is that they can get tangled up in your hair or fall out when you turn your head quickly. With smart helmets, you don't need any headphones at all! They come equipped with bone-conduction speakers so you can listen to music without worrying about getting tangled up in the wires or having them fall out. Smart Helmets come with a controller on the chin strip for playing/pausing/switching between songs and answering calls.

Sleek and Compact Design

Smart helmets are designed with the same aerodynamic requirements as a regular helmet and are made to look identical to a regular helmet, side by side, you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference. Physically, a smart helmet and regular helmet are identical, but the technology that’s packed inside a smart helmet goes to show how far we’ve come with the technology that’s available to us. Although there is plenty of technology integrated into the helmet, our smart helmets are waterproof and CPSC certified. We’ve tested our helmets through all weather conditions, giving our customers the confidence to take on any adventure regardless of the weather conditions.

Conclusion

With so many benefits to using a smart helmet, it's no wonder why more riders are making the switch. They're comfortable and stylish and are packed with features that can increase the chances of your safety while you’re out riding. As long as you pick a smart helmet that fits correctly, you’ll be riding with peace of mind throughout your entire bike journey.
